A great many people seem to be under the impression that I am paid to do this. In fact it cost's me time and money to maintain these pages. I would need a staff to answer all the questions people e-mail me. I am listing some of the common questions I get asked every week here.
A: Check to make sure that you have set up your news server in your Web browsers configuration. In Netscape you will find it by going to "Options/Preferences" on the menu and then selecting "Set Preferences on: Mail and News."
A: Many news servers, especially educational providers, CENSOR the adult newsgroups. Some news servers simply do not have the resources to provide access to every newsgroup. You have two choices. First you can petition your system administration to provide access to the newsgroups you want, or second you can switch to a service provider who can give you a full news feed. If you live in a remote location you may need to suscribe to two internet service providers, one to provide local dial-up and a second for a complete news service.
A: There used to be, but most have disappeared. You can try one of the servers on this list. It's an old list of free news servers, I haven't tried most of them so let me know which servers work or not.
A:You can't, at least not with Netscape versions up to 2.0. For now you need additional software. My favorite is WinVn, although there are several good programs that will allow you to read USENET posts and automatically decode attached files. Check with your service provider or look in my FTP site.
A:You can't, at least not without a seperate plug in program. I prefer using a dedicated IRC program such as MIRC. Ask your service provider or check my FTP site.
A:Most of the time this message is the equivalent of a busy signal. FTP sites have a limited number of people who can access them at any one time. You just need to be patient and keep trying.
A:Ask your service provider, or better yet if you have to ask, hire a consultant.
