| Picking a good web hosting company is one of the most important decisions you will make when starting your Internet business.
Things to look out for:
- Buy a domain name!
- To get your personal domain name you will have to pay the Internic $35 a year + most hosting companies will charge around $30 to set it up. DO IT! You will spend a lot of time building traffic to your site. Should you become unhappy with your web hosting company you can move your domain to another company and not lose your sites traffic.
See if the domain you want is available here.
- Don't believe "Unlimited Bandwidth"!
- Many companies advertise that they offer "unlimited bandwidth". Don't fall for it. Bandwidth costs them money, there is no way they can give it away. Most companies have unstated limits and will turn off your account when you exceed them. They will often offer you some alternate very expensive price plan to turn your account back on. And/or they will host many more accounts than their Internet connection can handle resulting in your web site running as slow as molasses. There is no free lunch, you need to pay for the bandwidth you use.
- Don't over pay for bandwidth!
- Reputable hosts sell bandwidth in Gigabyte or 1000 Megabyte increments. If bandwidth prices are listed for smaller increments DO THE MATH! Expect to pay $5-$10 per Gig. of bandwidth. I have seen a lot of sites that have great base rates and services but sell additional bandwidth for 10 cents per Meg., THAT IS OVER $100 PER GIG. or 10-20 times what you should be paying. You should also pay attention to companies that make you buy bandwidth in fixed amounts. This is not necessarily bad, but you could be paying for a lot of bandwidth you are not using.
- Don't waste your time with FREE web space!
- There are many companies on the net that will give you free web space: Geocities, Tripod, among others. These sites are great places to make a home page and learn how to write HTML, just don't use them to host your business. Most, if not all of them, do not allow adult sites and many of them do not allow business sites. They will turn your site off if you use too much bandwidth and since you can't have your own domain name all your traffic will be lost.
